The skipper of the Bangladesh cricket team, Mushfiqur Rahim, scored a fantastic double hundred in Bangladesh’s first innings in the first test match against Sri Lanka. That was the first double hundred scored by a Bangladeshi batsman in test cricket.
At the end of the third day’s play, the score of Bangladesh was 438 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim were not out on 189 and 152 respectively.
On the fourth morning, Ashraful got out after adding just one more run to his overnight score. He tried to loft Rangana Herath over extra cover by coming down the track, but, he couldn’t get to the pitch of the ball. The ball turned, took the outside edge and went to Angelo Mathews who was at first slip.
But, Mushfiqur continued to play sensible cricket and his partner Nasir Hossain who had come after the fall of Ashraful’s wicket was also looking in great nick. He hit a flurry of boundaries at the start of his innings and then, after getting to his fifty, he slowed down a bit.
Mushfiqur completed his double hundred just after lunch, but, he got out immediately after that. He tried to play across the line and was trapped plump in front. Kulasekara got his wicket.
Nasir played sensibly with the tail-enders and built small partnerships with them to take Bangladesh past the Sri Lankan total. He also completed his first test hundred in the meantime.
Nasir was also dismissed immediately after the completion of his hundred and after his dismissal, the rest of the Bangladesh wickets fell in a hurry.
However, Bangladesh managed to take a lead of 68 runs.
Sri Lanka got a great start in the second innings and at the end of the fourth day’s play, they were at 116 for 1.
